UKAS and DWTS Accreditation for Algae, Chlorophyll 'a' & Zooplankton Analysis
Mar 23, 2016
ALS Environmental are pleased to announce that we have successfully accredited Algae, Chlorophyll 'a' and Zooplankton analysis to UKAS ISO 17025 and DWTS standards.
The methods are critical to our customers, in order for them to evaluate the public safety of rivers, lakes and reservoirs for any algal blooms and any associated toxins which may be produced. The optimum performance of water treatment processes can be affected by algae, as they can block filters that are used at treatment works.
Accreditation has been achieved for:
- Algae in surface water drinking waters by microscopic examination.
- Chlorophyll and Phaeophytin in drinking, surface and groundwater by spectrophotometry.
- Zooplankton including veligers in drinking, surface and groundwater by microscope examination.
Analysis is also important where safety of bathers and recreational water sports are being undertaken and also where high Oxygen depletion rates may occur leading to fish fatalities in rivers.
Water companies are also required, on aesthetic grounds, to take steps to ensure animals (like Zooplankton) do not accumulate in such numbers that they appear in tap water.
Chlorophyll analysis gives a snap shot of the biomass for Algal growth in water.
Further information and advice on Algae and Zooplankton can be found on the DWI website.
Pervinder Johal, Coventry Operations Manager at ALS Environmental comments;
ALS Environmental are the first commercial laboratory to have these parameters accredited to UKAS and DWTS standards. It is a testament to the technical knowledge and expertise of our scientists that we continue to excel in the continuous improvement of our methods and associated enhancement in the quality of the results.
ALS Environmental have the capability to isolate Algae and Zooplankton and identify the isolates to genus and species and a comprehensive report can be generated identifying the isolates in water samples upon request.
We are one of only a handful of laboratories in the UK that have this capability and the only commercial laboratory in the UK that have accreditation for these parameters.
