Northumbrian Water provides high quality drinking water to over 2.7 million people and treats the waste water from 2.65 million people in the North East of England. ALS Environmental have been awarded the analytical contract to work with Northumbrian Water to help them deliver the Chemical Investigation Programme 2 (CIP2) project between 2015 and 2020.

The Water Framework Directive (WFD), under 200 / 60 / EC, has placed a responsibility on European Community Water Suppliers to monitor a range of emerging pollutants.CIP2 has been designed to generate data to support the WFD objective of improving overall water quality and protecting the environment.

Under this agreement Northumbrian Water have a responsibility and a duty of care to provide analytical data to UK Water Industry Research (UKWIR), who are managing the CIP2 project; this data must be supplied by 2020 and the CIP2 project must cover samples from a range of matrices, taken over a 5 year period.

With a large proportion of Northumbrian Water's analysis being undertaken in-house, they required a UKAS ISO17025:2005 accredited partner to support them in times of increased demand, or for parameters outside of their scope. These addtional paramaters include a range of challenging organic Priority substances, many with much lower reporting limits than these matrices usually require. ALS Environmental have one of the broadest ranges of accreditation commercially available to the market, and our ability to deliver the CIP2 programme set us apart from our competitors as a supplier of analytical services to Northumbrian Water.
