Geraint Williams, Associate at ALS Hawarden, is delivering a presentation at the Large Atmospheric Storage Tanks (LASTFIRE) conference being held on 7^th - 10^th June in Helsinki.

Geraint’s talk will cover the analysis of Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in firefighting foams and surface swabs.

PFAS are a group of chemicals that are found in Aqueous Film-Forming Foams (AFFF) used in fire suppression systems. Analysis is needed to assess PFAS in stockpiles of existing foams, in order to comply with the latest regulations, and also to verify that effective decontamination has been conducted where AFFF has been replaced with alternative Fluorine-Free Foams (F3). 

AFFF concentrates often contain complex mixtures of individual PFAS constituents which require more advanced analytical testing so that decisions can be made on the most robust and reliable data. In addition, analysis of swabs is carried out to determine the potential for rebound of residual PFAS in F3 foams before change-out occurs.
