ALS Environmental Reduces Carbon Footprint
Sep 19, 2014
ALS Group have a commitment to protecting the environment in which we live. As part of this commitment ALS Environmental strive to reduce the Carbon Footprint of our business across all laboratories and sectors. As part of this drive we have managed to reduce our Carbon Footprint by over 20% since 2011.
ALS Environmental have been able to make such a significant reduction in our carbon usage by taking on several projects that have all had a significant impact on our business. Some of the key success stories in this effort have been:
- Lightfoot in our Vans - By utilising driving efficiencies ALS Environmental are able to ensure our collection drivers are being more economical when collecting your samples. The system saves approximately 24 tonnes of Carbon per annum on our vehicles.
- New Roof in Coventry - The ALS Environmental laboratory in Coventry has undergone major development works over the summer to install a new roof. This will reduce heat energy wastage throughout the year.
- Improved Methods - ALS Environmental are constantly reviewing our extraction and analytical methods to ensure we are working to the most effective and environmentally friendly approach across all of our methods - the clearest case of this is the introduction of the MALDI-ToF confirmation technique.
- Drop-off Points - The introduction of drop-off points throughout the UK enables ALS Environmental to reduce some of the collections and routes we take to reduce our Carbon footprint. The list of new drop-off locations can be found here.
- Chester Laboratory Transfer - The transfer of sites from our old location in Runcorn to our new facilities in Chester has had a major impact on our Gas and Electricity usage on site. The new Chester location is a modern facility and closer to the River Dee; this allows for reduced transport miles for our collection vehicles for this project.
In an age when environmental impact is a key factor in choosing business partners ALS Environmental are proud of the steps we have taken to reduce our Carbon Footprint. We have a "Quarterly Carbon Steering group" that has an aim for a quarterly reduction in our carbon footprint and expect to have more success as part of our ISO 14001 certification in the future.
