Apr 21, 2021
The Yorkshire Contaminated Land Forum are holding the webinar: PFAS in brownfield development on the 19th May 2021.
This webinar will focus on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as a contaminant in brownfield development, particularly in the context of northern England. It will include presentations on aspects of PFAS assessment and management followed by a Q&A session.
PFAS are persistent in the environment and can bioaccumulate in humans and some plant species. PFAS are ubiquitous contaminants of concern in groundwater. The key exposure pathway is ingestion of drinking water. There is mounting evidence of adverse health outcomes including probably links with high cholesterol, thyroid disease, pregnancy-induced hypertension, ulcerative colitis, testicular cancer and kidney cancer.
The webinar will be chaired by Jenny Lightfoot (Arup) and the presenters and topics are:
- Ian Ross (Tetra Tech) will discuss the challenge presented and solutions to managing PFAS on brownfield sites
- Geraint Williams (ALS) will present on laboratory testing for PFAS in soils and groundwater
- Angela Haslam (Environment Agency) will present a regulator’s perspective and outline ongoing EA research into PFAS in the water environment

ALS has vast experience in working with environmental consultants and remediation contractors throughout the world. The assessment of PFAS presents specific and unique challenges, it is therefore essential to partner with a laboratory with experience in analysing such samples to ensure sites are properly characterised using the most advanced analytical techniques available.
